NYE Tips From An. L.A. Local
Los Angeles doesn’t exactly bring in the New Year with a bang.
Instead, she saves her elegant gown for New Year’s Day: the Rose Bowl parade followed by the Rose Bowl game. She glistens on this day, looking radiant in the warm sunshine while the rest of the USA is shivering with snow in the driveway.
So when it comes to New Year’s Eve, Los Angeles does not offer anything special. It has to be the only major city in the world that does not have a public fireworks show in which tens of thousands of people turn out for a city-wide party scene.
In fact, the only public fireworks show is in Long Beach at the Queen Mary, which puts on a spectacular show. On board, the iconic ship and LA landmark has a NYE party ($99 per person) but anyone can go out along the water downtown and see the show.
Parties, Bars & Places To Go For NYE In L.A.
So if you want to party in L.A., for NYE, here are some tips from a local:
• Attend A Promoter Party. There are some big ones with a couple thousand people. You’ll pay somewhere between $50-150, plus drinks. If you’re single, here’s a NYE party in Redondo Beach that is full of singles.
• Go To A Bar Or Club. Find an area of town that best suits your personality – Los Angeles is as diverse as it is spread out – and go to a bar in that area. Many of L.A.’s nightclubs are in Hollywood, and this is where you’ll find a kind of Vegas club type of scene. On the opposite end, there’s Hermosa Beach in the South Bay that’s kicked-back casual. Most bars, even small neighborhood ones, charge a cover on NYE.
• Go To The Beaches. Well why not – Los Angeles and neighboring Orange County have gorgeous coastlines from Malibu to Newport Beach. Here’s a few casual bar suggestions in select coastal cities, from north to south:
– Santa Monica, Chey Jays
– Venice Beach – Venice Whaler
– Manhattan Beach – Shellback Tavern
– Hermosa Beach – Sharkeez (there are several other bars at the pier, as well)
– Redondo Beach – Old Tony’s on the RB Pier (upstairs bar)
– Long Beach – Auld Dublinder (across from the Convention Center on Pine Av.e)
– Newport Beach – Woody’s Wharf. Also Blackie’s, one of a few small dive bars near the pier.
• Go To The Queen Mary
• Go To Union Station. There’s a high-end Roaring 20s party taking place at this Art Deco building just east of downtown L.A.
