Oktoberfest & Shade Hotel Opening In Redondo Beach Highlight Happenings
By Kevin Wilkerson, PubClub.com Blogger & South Bay Resident
Welcome to the PubClub.com South Bay Party Report!
The Party Report is brought to you by Kona Brewing Company, makers of that fine Big Wave Golden Ale, the tasty Longboard Lager, Castaway IPA and other excellent beers, all with that “liquid aloha” spirit brought in from the Hawaiian Islands. Get it in the bars by the glass or by the case at grocery, drug and liquor stores. Yes, get it by the case!
So did everyone survive the Hometown Fair and beer garden? Saturday was as crowded as I’ve seen it in a few years.
Well done!
SOUTH BAY OKTOBERFEST AT BAY CLUB REDONDO BEACH
A friend called this week to ask whether or not it was worth getting tickets to the inaugural South Bay Oktoberfest, taking place Saturday at King Harbor Bay Club (2-6 p.m., $35). Heck, I thought it was a no-brainer to go to it; after all, it’s put on by Smackfest Events and Berry Bly, Joe’s Band is playing (along with a DJ and Berry Bly’s Soul Shaker) and you know the crowd will be great.
And then as I began to think more about it more, I started to get really excited about it. It’s going to be a warm and perfect beer-drinking day, it’s in a great location, of course the crowd will be good, and it will be the liveliest thing happening in the South Bay on Saturday.
My friend quickly agreed and purchased a ticket. Hopefully he used the PubClub link below and you should too, if you don’t already have your tickets.

Here’s what else is happening in the South Bay this week and weekend!
WEDNESDAY: SAINT ROCK BENEFIT & JEREMY BUCK
Flashback moment! Think back to the Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts. Remember those paintings to the left of the stage that were coming together just as the sun started going down, the band was playing its final numbers and your, ahem, adult beverages, were nearing the bottom of your concealed container? Well those paintings are being auctioned off at Saint Rocke on Wednesday with the money going to Children’s Hospital of L.A.
Jeremy Buck will be there providing music and there’s no cover charge tho donations will gladly be accepted. It starts with an appetizer reception at 6 and there are drink special all night.
THURSDAY: 310YP MONTHY MIXER
This time the 310YP mixer mixes it up by getting out of the beachside cities and going to King Harbor Brewing Company. This free event takes place 6-10. Note that it’s at the brewery off 190th Street near Torrance, not the tasting room in King Harbor Marina. The address is: 2907 182nd Street, Redondo Beach.

FRIDAY: SHADE HOTEL REDONDO BAR OPENS
You can’t ever say that PubClub.com is not ever on top of things, because when it comes to the opening of Shade’s new hotel and bar in King Harbor Marina, I was literally on top of things! Knowing the hotel was opening Friday, I rolled up on my cool baby-blue Kona Brewing Company cruiser (the one I know you all want!) on Tuesday afternoon to scout out the bar and check out the layout so I could report it to you.
Well as soon as I got there, a whistle started blowing, construction workers started scattering and the staff began rushing around as if Nick Saban were conducting a football drill.
I had arrived one hour before its first private pre-opening party, so I got off the bike, leaned against the railing by the boats and soaked in the scene. From a distance, I saw Mike Zislas talking on a cell phone, one (or perhaps both) of the Philly twins from Chelsea Pub (one of whom is the beverage manager, either Kurt or Kirin, but I can’t say which; I mean can YOU tell them apart!?), MB Shade GM Shaunna McKelvey who was organizing precise table and chair locations on the patio, and one staffer who apparently spent his first paycheck on a tub of hair gel.
From my comfortable perch, I was able to observe that there is a large L-shaped patio for outdoor drinks over the harbor (yes!!!) and the inside bar looks a lot like its sister in Manhattan Beach.
From my research, I was able to learn that it will have Shade Hour Happy Hour, M-F 3-6 p.m. So yes that means this Friday. It features $4 draft beers – the Manhattan location has the aforementioned Longboard Lager and I certainly hope it’s also available in Redondo – most wines for $6-7, cocktails for $7 and appetizers from $8-10.
I also suspect it will be a great spill-over bar after Oktoberfest on Saturday.
There will be much more on Shade’s Redondo location in future Party Reports and, of course, on PubClub.com.
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY BUS OCT. 22
Okay folks, this is coming up soon! Don’t wait too long because it will be too late! $30 for girls, $35 for guys. Get out your Parrothead party gear and get on the bus! Here’s a review from last year’s awesome parking lot tailgate party scene – it’s like nothing else in the world!

HOW THEY RUINED BUCCANEER DAYS ON CATALINA
You can’t imagine how excited I was to go back to Buccaneer Days last weekend, then how disappointed I was to learn they now not only charge for it but a ridiculous and whopping $45! Well of course, I just had to address this issue and I did in this post:
