LA Galaxy Hosts Public Game-Watching Party On Big Screen
And one Los Angeles city having a public game-watching party against Germany. Hermosa Beach is having a big screen on the pier, much like it does for bands during the Fiesta Hermosa celebration on Memorial and Labor Day weekends. It’s Thursday, June 25, at 9 a.m.
This one is being put up by the LA Galaxy as a promotion to remind people that not only does Los Angeles have a professional soccer team, and one that plays a half hour away in Carson, but that the sport exists other than every four years at the World Cup.
The Galaxy put up a screen for USA’s opening match, a win over Ghana, and more than a thousand people showed up at the pier for it. They put beach and lawn chairs on Pier Plaza and made it a pretty good party scene at bars, especially Hennessy’s, Watermans and Silvio’s.
Don’t expect that on Thursday, tho. The USA-Ghana match was on a Saturday afternoon, ideal for such an event. The USA was undefeated and now it (and American fans) are reeling after letting Portugal score with seconds remaining to turn a victory into a deflating 2-2 tie.
The Americans do not need to win to advance; they simply need to avoid getting drilled 4-0 (or worse) as did Portugal when it played Germany. That game was a major setback for soccer in America, but the USA can get back some mojo with a win or even close game.
