Belly Up Blonde & Legend Of Laguna (Seca) IPA Are Top Brews Along The California Coast
There is the tendency of when you go to a craft brewpub to expect a menu of complicated beers with a myriad of ingredients.
That’s fine but when brewmasters get too carried away, concentrating so much on combinations and styles that may or may not work they often ignore the basics, that’s when I get frustrated.
So it’s such a welcome relief whenever I go to Peter B’s Brewpub in Monterey, CA. It’s a brewery that makes its own beer on site – you can see the tanks through a glass wall and drink and eat among barrels – behind the Portola Hotel & Spa and just in front of Fisherman’s Wharf on Monterey Bay.
Whenever I go in, I know exactly what to expect from the beer and the place. And that is one of the best craft beer lagers I’ve ever had – the Belly Up Blonde Ale – and a loaded lineup of other beers on the regular menu such as the Legend Of Laguna IPA (named after the many legends who have raced at Laguna Seca Raceway just up Highway 68) and the Stout Resistance.
As a result I’m “beer comfortable” here. I also noticed something else during my last visit that I probably just kind of took for granted during previous visits. And that’s the fact that, despite being different, each beer has a distinctive Peter B’s flavor. One sip and you know it’s from here. That’s something I’ve never tasted at any other brewpub and it speaks volumes to Peter B’s consistency and attention to detail.
The bottom line is that while Peter B’s has its creative beers and always seasonal beers, its standard selections are simply good, quality, tasty beers. And what more could one really want from a craft brewery?
Nothing, if you ask me.
Oh, and the beers are just $6 with a flight of five for 10 bucks. You can’t really beat that anywhere.
