It has to be difficult to be a vegan and vegetarian during the holidays, and especially on New Year’s Eve.

All your friends are gathering for a big bash that includes food, and that often involves ham, meat and all sorts of other sorts of belly-filling items that are not on the menu for vegans an vegetarians.

But what can you have to eat at these happenings while everyone else is gorging on food items that are off limits to you? If you’re a true vegan, you can’t even have any deviled eggs!

But not to worry, with the right knowledge vegans can enjoy their own feast at a New Year’s Eve house party. According to Nyisha Rylander of puravidavegan.com, here’s how to not only enjoy eating on NYE as a vegan or vegetarian, but to truly relish being at one. She provides  these five easy tips to follow:

1.) Bring at least two dishes for you, that you also know others will enjoy, such as a green bean casserole and sweet potatoes.

2.) Don’t show up starving. Eat a little at home before going to the party. That way, if there’s not a lot of food options for you, you won’t be hungry.

3) Don’t make snide remarks at the table when people are eating meat. Conversely, if you’re a meat eater, don’t make snide remarks at the vegan or vegetarian.

4.) Don’t bring up the fact you are a vegan or vegetarian unless you are asked. Be polite. This is a big one.

5.) Remember you’re there to be with family or friends and not really to eat. Keep that in mind. And keep calm.

So you see, don’t have to be like a party pooper on NYE if your a vegan or vegetarian. As for drinking and avoiding a hangover, well that’s another issue!
