I made myself a very good drink at my home bar and was quite satisfied.
It started with a quality bourbon – Terry Bradshaw’s rye – and included a very simple mix. And unexpected one, too. I mixed it with the low-sugar energy drink mocean and it worked as well as one of Bradshaw’s Super Bowl touchdown passes. It was as easy to make as handing off the ball to Franco Harris and just as effective.
That’s because while mocean is, first and foremost, an energy drink, it works as a cocktail mixer, too. Plus, it comes in various flavors. It contains shiso, which oaded with iron, calcium, carotene and antioxidants. This adds good flavor to the drink, a key factor in making a good mixed drink. Plus, it’s healthy. Used in Eastern cultures shiso help with asthma, congestion and stomach issues.
Developed by a father-son team, mocean is made with purified filtered water, natural flavors, ditric acid and organic green tea caffeine in addition to shiso. At just 10 calories per can, it’s easy on the waistline.
I used the white peach flavor for the rye drink and that proved to be a perfect pairing. But why stop there? I also tried the strawberry vodka with tequila and the mandarin citrus. I usually make my rum drinks with orange juice but the mandarin provided a milder and less acidic taste than the orange juice.

One of the toughest things about being your own bartender, or making cocktails for others when you are home – and I have a lot of experience in this area – is having something to mix with the liquor. Sodas are an easy fallback but they aren’t all that good for you or even tasty in most cases. Plus you really don’t want to waste a good spirit by mixing it with soda. Professional bartenders use several ingredients that most ordinary people have never heard of and are not worth finding if they did for occasional mixes.
So having something tasty and healthy where all you have to do is pop open a can is highly desirable and very convenient option.
And here’s something else: because it’s a low-sugar energy drink, it you’ve had too many cocktails of any kind one night and wake up feeling groggy, these mocean beverages provide a good pick-me-up in the morning.
