This Red From Portugal Wins The Top Prize From A Panel Of Professional Tasters

The wines were judged by 90 wine tasters from around the world and a selection from Portugal was the overall winner, taking the Champion of Champions award.
The wine is Justino’s Madeira Terrantez 1978, Justino’s Madeira, which the organization describes as: “dense and concentrated, a wine over which to linger. Aromas of toffee, nuts, and baked apples lead to a beautifully captivating palate showing layers of spices right through to its long, rich, and elegant finish.”
A second Portugal wine, Bulas Vintage Port 2017, Bulas Family Estates, won the Champion Fortified title. In all, four wines from that country made the top 30 list. That’s the same number as wines from Australia, which has been making a big push to produce quality wines. It seems to be working, according to the International Wine Challenge tasters.
Italy and Spain each had three of its country’s wines to make the list. France had two, including its Taittinger champagne, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc des Blancs Brut 2008, winning the Champion Sparkling category.
Now in its 37th year, the International Wine Challenge is regarded among wine experts as the world’s most rigorous, impartial and influential wine competition. It assesses every wine ‘blind’ and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Awards include medals (Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Commended awards.
Trophies are awarded to the very best wines in each category. The International Wine Challenge is committed to helping consumers discover great wine, and the medals displayed on winning bottles offer a trusted guarantee of quality.
“What sets the International Wine Challenge apart from any other global wine competition is the overtly democratic way in which the wines are judged,” Co-chair Helen McGinn said. “We pride ourselves in having expert judges from all areas of the industry who taste the wines, giving each wine the very best chance to be judged as fairly as possible.”
