After years of being a Chardonnay-exclusive wine drinker, I’ve started drinking mostly reds lately. Part of this is budget – you can get a quality red wine for about half the price of a decent chardonnay – and part is the fact that here in California it can be difficult to find a non-buttery chard.

And I don’t like buttery wines.

Plus, red wine makes for better photos that I post on social media and PubClub.com!

But there’s one side affect with red wines that I do not like. Occasionally, I wake up in the middle of the night with what feels like heartburn. So I’ve taken to having a few Tums or equivalent by the nightstand. I also take them with me when I travel.

But now, all I need is small medicine-type bottle of Just The Wine.

Turns out it is the sulfates in the red wine that is giving my stomach a few turns and wakes me up at night. Just The Wine – a product that comes in a small bottle about the size of eye drops – reduces the sulfates in wines (as well as champagne and beers) by up to 80%.

And it works. I can indeed report that by putting in a couple of drops to a glass of red wine, I don’t have any stomach-grinding issues.

You add one drop per two ounces of wine, champagne or beer. That’s three drops in a glass and 13 to a bottle. Then swirl the glass so the drops mix in with the wine.

There is one catch, tho. It does slightly affect the taste of the wine. It takes away some of the full flavor. I usually drink the full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, some Pinot Noir with a little merlot, and the occasional Zinfandel. And after adding in the drops the wine tastes, well, just a tad on the watery side.

It’s not bad, mind you, and certainly does not ruin the taste. In fact, upon my first sip after first using Just The Wine, I paused and said, “hmmm, there’s something just a little different here.” Trust me, you won’t throw out the glass!

My personal solution is to put in a drop every other glass. This is the perfect median and I can now drink red wine with no fear of having any minor stomach issues later in the night.

Some people have given up drinking wine because of the sulfates, and if that’s you, then Just The Wine may just be your solution to vino paradise. It was created by Jean Ishihara, who did have to give up drinking wine because it made her sick. Her father is a former chemist and he developed the formula, and Jean markets it with her entrepreneurial brother Rodney.

By the way, sulfates can also be found in beer. So if you’re also a beer lover like myself but are bothered by sulfates, then Just The Wine could work for you, as well.

Just The Wine is just $5.95 a bottle and $27 for five bottles. You can order it on-line at: www.justthewine.com.

Cheers!
