JAWS The Revenge, filmed on location in Nassau – dat be in da Bahamas, mon – was a terrible flick but a terrific gig to work on for us crew members.
For three sweltering months I toiled as part of the underwater film crew: positioning the mechanical shark, safety diving for the pilot who splashed a real Beechcraft, rigging lights, doing stunts, shooting stills – the usual.
That was during the day, working off boats. Nights were free since we don’t shoot in the dark. So all that thirsty work lead to one recurring mantra: “Rum, rum, rum your boat…”
Evening chow consisted of pizza, conch fritters and rum-n-Cokes at hole-in-the-wall dives where the cruise ships tie up for a while. Luckily for us bachelors – actually, everyone’s a bachelor 450 miles from home! – Spring Break was spread over weeks during the filming. Droves of hotties invaded Nassau for a respite of sun and booze and fuc, er, fun!
Enter the infamous Bahamas Breeze.
You may know the name, but not the recipe that follows. Breezes were introduced to us by our local production assistant who really knows her rums, and their effects. Meet Jill, who is a tad camera-shy…
Instantly our team became addicts, not only for the fruity island flavors and smooth Cuban Ron Añejo, but the seductive side effects. Oh, the miracle of a Breeze… man’s new best friend!
OK, here goes. First, round up a bottle of Bacardi Añejo amber rum, since we can’t get the good Cuban stuff. Appleton Estate rum is also perfect. Don’t skimp on the rum!
Next, secure a liter of Ricardo Coconut Rum made in da Bahamas. You can substitute Malibu Coconut Rum, but it’s just not the same.
While you’re at it, grab a bottle of good Apricot Brandy.
Finally, you’ll need two 12-oz. cans of juice. Get one each of Dole’s pineapple juice and orange juice. Better yet, get one of Dole’s orange-peach-mango and one of Dole’s pineapple-orange.
BAHAMA BREEZE DRINK RECIPE
Snag a one-gallon plastic milk jug, and mix:
2 cups amber rum
1 cup coconut rum
1 cup apricot brandy
48-oz. of pineapple-orange juice (water added)
48-oz. of orange-peach-mango juice (water added)
Or… for a slightly stronger, less sweet and less “coconutty” concoction, mix as I do:
3 cups amber rum
1/2 cup coconut rum
1 cup apricot brandy
48-oz. of pineapple-orange juice (water added)
48-oz. of orange-peach-mango juice (water added)
Stir and chill. Serve frothy-cold in cheap plastic cups over crushed ice, and always shake jug well before serving. Toss in a Maraschino cherry for a tasty color touch.
UNSUSPECTING FEMALE REACTION TO THE BAHAMA BREEZE
A gal who’s never had a Breeze before reacts with utter predictability. Gingerly taking the cup she asks what’s in it. “Oh, just rum and fruit juice.” The fruit juice part lends an air of innocence and healthfulness to the deceptive Breeze.
Looking warily over the rim, she takes a tentative sip. A moment as the mangoes and peaches and pineapple dance around on her palate. Hmm… not bad. Eyes twinkle. A coy smile kills the wariness. She’s hooked!
The key now is to not rush things. Just savor the flavor. Indulge in double-entendre chit-chat. Give the rums a chance to work. That’s what they’re good at.
Now, while all that’s going on, let’s get to the insider nickname for these Breezes. It’s “PD” – short for Panty Dropper. By the time you get to the half-gallon mark you’ll see why… and be a happy convert for life!
Oh, before I go, remind me to tell you about the Goombay Smash I discovered on Green Turtle Cay, and what happened after just two of them.
Cheers!
