Having A Devil Of A Good Time At The Devil’s Cove Boat Tie-Up Party

There were $1 beers on 6th Street, a walk-through beer cooler at a convenience store, boats tied up in a cove and girls in bikinis wearing cowboy hats.
I had not died and gone to party heaven, but was living in a real-life dream. I was in Austin for Memorial Day Weekend and to this day the memories remain as big as the steak at the Big Texan Ranch.
It was, without question, my most memorable and all-time best-ever Memorial Day Weekend.
The weekend began with cheap drinks in Austin’s prime nightlife area, and comprised primarily of partying on the water of Lake Travis, tying up with other bats in a place called Devil’s Cove.
As a bonus, we caught sunsets at the legendary Oasis on the water where people clap within moments of each other from the three balconies when the sun disappears into the water and partied at what instantly became one of my all-time favorite waterfront bars, the Hula Hut.
The undisputed highlights were at Devil’s Cove, where girls and guys walked from boat to boat as if on an aquatic pub crawl, stopping to party along the way, a DJ rocked a dance party from atop a house boat and a couple of friends got escorted back to our boat at the end of the day hanging onto a sheriff’s Jet Ski.
Devil’s Cove is where all the boats tie up to each other in rows that are the Austin equivalent of the picnic tables at Oktoberfest in Munich. About as much beer is consumed, although here everyone is in bikinis or board shorts and you can jump into the water at any moment, which adds to the revelry and fun.
And those Texas girls – well, I cold think of only one word to describe them and the scene at Devil’s Cove: wow!
I never wanted the days to end but when they did, we pulled up the anchor and headed to waterfront bars, the largest and most popular of which was Carlos & Charlie’s.
There have been other fun Memorial Day Weekends – most notably our 30+ group trip to Pam Desert in California, which we did for several years – but nothing tops Lake Travis, Austin and the devil of a good time in Devil’s Cove.
