How to Make The Most of a Day Trip to Rome

June 27, 2024 by kevinwilkerson

Roman Colosseum

So, you’ve got just one day to explore Rome? Challenge accepted! Let’s be honest, trying to see Rome in a day is like trying to read “War and Peace” on a coffee break. But don’t worry, with some smart planning, you can definitely experience a big old slice of the Eternal City that’ll leave you craving more. Here’s how:

  1. Start Early: Beat the Crowds and the Heat

Set your alarm and be ready to hit the travel ground running—or power walking, at least. Starting early not only helps you beat the tourist crowds but also the midday Mediterranean sun. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but hey, that doesn’t mean you can’t try to see it in one!

  1. Espresso Yourself: Grab a Quick Italian Breakfast

Dive right in to the Italian way of life by grabbing an espresso at a local bar, where you can stand and sip like a local. Toss back a cornetto (Italian croissant) to fuel up for your marathon day. It’s quick, it’s delicious, and let’s face it, you’ll need the caffeine.

  1. Make a Beeline for the Colosseum

Start with a bang at one of Rome’s iconic landmarks, the Colosseum. Pre-book your tickets online to skip the long lines. As you wander through this ancient amphitheater, imagine the roar of the crowds and the epic gladiator battles that once defined this monument. It’s a no-brainer photo op and a powerful start to your Roman holiday.

  1. Roam Through the Roman Forum

Just a stone’s throw from the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, the hub of ancient Roman life. Stroll through ruins that once buzzed with political intrigue, market bartering, and the most sophisticated social networking the world had known until Facebook came along.

  1. Take a Break at Luggage Storage Roma Termini

Don’t lug your bags around all day. Swing by Luggage Storage Roma Termini to stash your belongings safely. It’s easy, affordable, and will make your trek through the city a lot less sweaty and a lot more enjoyable. With your hands free, you can snap better photos and maybe even juggle a gelato or two.

  1. Toss a Coin in the Trevi Fountain

No visit to Rome is complete without seeing the Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, if you toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, you’re guaranteed a return trip to Rome. It’s touristy, sure, but who are we to argue with tradition?

  1. Lunch Like a Local

For lunch, skip the tourist traps. Find a trattoria off the beaten path and order a plate of cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper pasta) or a classic Roman pizza. Tip: look for places filled with locals or ask a friendly shopkeeper for recommendations.

  1. Vatican City: A Divine Detour

If you can swing it, make a quick pilgrimage to Vatican City. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are a must-see, even if just for the awe-inspiring Michelangelo ceiling. Remember, modest dress is required, so keep those knees and shoulders covered!

  1. Wander and Wonder

With any remaining time, just wander. Rome is a city filled with surprises around every corner—an ancient statue here, a quaint courtyard there, and enough cobblestone streets to work off all that pasta. Let yourself get a little lost; sometimes those unplanned moments become the best memories.

  1. Explore the Pantheon

Don’t miss the chance to step inside the Pantheon, one of Rome’s best-preserved ancient monuments and a marvel of architectural prowess. Once a pagan temple and now a church, its giant dome and oculus are a sight to behold, casting heavenly light onto the marble floors. As you stand under the oculus, imagine the centuries of history that have unfolded right where you stand.

  1. Savor a Gelato on the Go

As you dart from one marvel to another, keep cool with a cone of gelato. Visit one of Rome’s famed gelaterias, like Gelateria del Teatro or Fatamorgana, and choose from a dazzling array of flavors. Eating gelato as you meander through Rome’s storied streets isn’t just a treat—it’s a movable feast for the senses.

  1. Visit the Campo de’ Fiori Market

For a slice of local life, swing by the Campo de’ Fiori Market. This bustling marketplace is the perfect spot to pick up fresh fruit or artisanal snacks. It’s also a fantastic place for people-watching and absorbing the vibrant local culture. Enjoy the lively banter, the colorful stalls, and the irresistible smells of fresh produce and spices.

  1. Apertivo Hour: You’ve Earned It

Cap off your day with Apertivo Hour—Italy’s version of happy hour, featuring drinks and small plates. It’s not just a drink; it’s a cultural ritual. Soak in the atmosphere, rub those sore feet, and toast to a day well spent.

Rome in a day? It’s sure to be a whirlwind, but it’s totally possible, and you will not regret your day of la dolce vita!
