One of the best ways to experience a place when you go visit is to get off of the beaten path. Sure, you want to go to the bucket list places like the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum. But, once you’ve ticked those off of your list, it’s time to get the authentic experience.
One of the best ways is to make it a point to visit some of the local wineries there. There is a wine production area in just about every country in the world as long as they aren’t too hot or too cold. Wherever you go, you can certainly find a winery to visit to learn about the local wines.
In this article, we will go over what it takes to plan a wine trip and do some wine tastings to take your vacation to another level.
Research the area
No matter which country you are planning to visit could have a winery to go visit. Take some time to look around online for the specific country or ask the concierge at your hotel where there might be a winery to visit. For example, Morocco is not known as a wine destination. Yet there are several wineries in the country like dunewines.com and a few more so there is the possibility of a wine tour even there.
The key is to understand distances. You may be very far away from the winery at your base hotel. This could make it unfeasible to visit unless there is a place for you to stay nearby. It all comes down to the research so make sure to have the right idea on how to get there and plan around that.
If you are in a country with wineries everywhere then you will be spoiled for choice and will need to plan based on other factors. Ask around or look at some reviews online for the wineries in the area where you’re staying and pick the one that suits your schedule and features the types of wines that are in line with your tastes.
Have a limit
Although we think you should visit these wineries responsibly, the idea of having a limit is more about how many wineries you should plan to visit. Try to limit yourself to three visits. First of all, if the wineries are not exactly near each other you may only have time to visit a limited amount. The other reason is that you can overdo it and end up not enjoying the experience. Your brain can only take in so much information so you risk finishing the day and not even remembering the important bits.
Have a driver
Chances are likely that your hotel either has a driver service you can hire or can send you to a service that you can hire on your own. It should go without saying that you shouldn’t be driving yourself if you plan to drink so hiring a driver is a must.
If you plan to go with some friends then sharing the cost makes it a budget option as well.
