I Would Rather Be In A Cool, Air Conditioned Bar Or Restaurant
I’m burning up here!
A massive heat wave has hit Southern California – it’s upper-80s at the coast when it’s normally in the mid-70s – and inland, temperatures are exceeding 100. Death Valley is predicted to hit 127 degrees. Were I foolish enough to go there.
But hey, what a blog post that would make – “here I am standing in a dirt field in on 127-degree day…”
Instead, as the thermometer in my San Diego apartment reads 84 degrees, I am thinking cooler thoughts. Will this “cooler head” prevail? Only will tell.
For instance, right now I would like to be sitting in a cool, air-conditioned restaurant or bar. Cold beer in front of me, hot bartender (preferably a blonde) serving me and a baseball game on the TV.
If only Gov. Nuisance would lift the COVID-19 “outdoor only” policy just for the next few days. I mean, who wants to go sit in the searing sunshine, no matter how cold the beer is at a place? If he wants people to be healthy and safe, how safe is it to be sitting outdoors in 90- and 100-degree heat just to get a bite to eat and a tall, cold drink??
I can’t turn on the A/C in the apartment because the power company has warned its customers about shutdowns due to overtaxing the grid. (How can this happen in this day and age of technology is a mystery to me.)
Even going to the beach is not a cooling option, for there is no ocean breeze, the sand is stinging hot and even when you get into the nice ocean, you’re hot, dry and sticky by the time you get back to your beach towel.
So I have resorted to the following tactics:
• Sticking my head in the freezer. This works remarkably well, by the way, albeit only for a short bursts.
• Taking an hour to shop for a loaf of bread in the local supermarket. That’s not really all that comfortable, tho, because we have to wear a mask and that in itself is hot.
• Looking at pictures from PubClub.com’s coverage of ski resorts and remembering freezing on chair lifts.
• Making frozen margaritas. Hey, why not, right!?
Now many of you may be saying “what a California weather wimp! Try being here where it’s 95 degrees with 95% humidity. You Cali people have it MADE!”
This is true, of course, but when one is used to the temperature being a mild 75 all the time with no humidity and evenings cooling down into the comfortable middle-60s, then anything in the 80s is downright miserable.
Frozen margarita anyone!?
