Celebration Event At Graceland & Cocktails To The King Of Rock ‘N Roll

Elvis Presley went from being a truck driver to a rock ‘n roll icon with swiveling hips, unique white jumpsuits, ridiculously long sideburns and a curled lip that sent women of all ages into a screaming frenzy.

He was born on January 8, 1935 which in 2017 would make him 82 years old. In Memphis, Graceland has celebrations lasting several days (few of them free, by the way) and on his birthday hosts an event that proclaims it as Elvis Presley Day in Memphis. This is free and takes place on the north lawn at 9:30 a.m. Starting at 10:30, Chrome Grill across from Graceland offers a complimentary slice of birthday cake and and a cup of coffee.

Strangely, there’s no official event in Las Vegas for the King’s birthday. It saves its big Elvis celebration for July. The Elvis Festival (July 13-16 in 2017) is s series of events at Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino (note, this is off the Strip).

So you just might have to make your own Elvis celebration on Jan. 8. Find a good Elvis playlist on YouTube and invite a bunch of friends over for a theme party.

Create fun Elvis cocktails like a “Hound Dog” (say, tequila and Sprite), a “Love Me Tender” (red wine with a splash of brandy) and, of course, a “Suspicious Minds” (vodka, passion fruit juice and a topper of rum).

After all, he deserves the attention. How many entertainers still command such a presence among fans decades after their death? Elvis may have become as bloated as a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade float, but he still had his devoted fans.
