Jimmy Buffett Fans & Tribute Bands Meet For Annual MOTM Festival
The fins are up and the Parrotheads are out in one of their key destinations: Key West, FL.
The 2015 Meeting of the Minds takes place in the Conch Republic from Nov-4-8. This multi-day festival is a celebration of the music and lifestyle of Jimmy Buffett and features dozens of TropRock bands, including the Coral Reefers, members of Buffett’s own band.
This is an event for serious fans of Buffett. To go to the associated events (mainly, the concerts at the host Casa Marina hotel) one must register in advance, be a member of a Parrothead club and pay a $90 registration fee.
For thousands of Parrotheads, it’s a real-life Margaritaville. Plenty of boat drinks are consumed and there are fins to the left, fins to the right all up and down Duval Street, at Mallory Square and especially at the Casa Marina.
“Our goal is to provide a safe, pleasant atmosphere in which to share and enjoy our common love of the music and writings of Jimmy Buffett, the fellowship of other members and to further the charitable ideals that we seek to uphold.” the organizer of the event, Parrot Heads in Paradise, states on its website.
In addition to the official events, there are all kinds of other activities taking place: parties in the Key West bars, sunset sails featuring TropRock musicians and of course the usual friendly silliness that occurs when a bunch of Parrotheads flock to a place.
Buffett himself does not attend, tho he has a long-standing association with Key West, making it an ideal location for the event. It’s where he went as a starving musician, where he was when he hit it big ad where he goes back to on occasion.
He also has a music studio there, which is by the water just down from the end of Duval Street.
