People Pack A Parking Lot in Pedro For A Real Music Festival Atmosphere (And Lots of Beer)
So when we find a new one, it’s like an archaeologist discovering an ancient lost city or a football coach unearthing a Hall of Fame receiver from Mississippi Valley State.
Such was the case when PubClub.com ventured to San Pedro’s Ports ‘O Call on a Friday night in late April to check out a concert called the Railroad Revival Tour. It involved three bands, including the wildly popular Mumford & Sons fresh off a show the previous weekend in Cochella, doing a six-city tour from California to New Orleans. By train. (Wonder if one of the trains is called The City of New Orleans?)
And it was a party! PubClub was immediately greeted by the news that Shock Top had already gone through something like 30 kegs of beer. And the first band had only been on stage for less than an hour!
In excess of 5,000 people were there, some of whom arrived early arrived in the morning even though the gates did not open until 5 in the evening. They came with lawn chairs and blankets to stake out their spot in the parking lot where the event was held. It felt a lot like Jazz Fest. Though it was definitely smaller than the legendary New Orleans gathering, the Railroad Revival looked, sounded and even smelled like a true music festival.
The crowd was good and obviously thirsty, for just abut everyone was holding a plastic cup of Shock Top, Budweiser or Bud Light. The music was more folk than rock, more spiritual than Snoop Dog.
The stars of the show: The bands!
In addition to Mumford and Sons, the Railroad Revival Tour includes Old Crowe Medicine Show and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It began April 21 in Oakland and also involved these stops: April 22 in San Pedro, April 23 in Tempe, April 24 in Marfa, TX; April 26 in Austin and April 27 in New Orleans.
The tour’s official website is RailroadRevivalTour.com.
More than 5,000 were “all aboard for the stop at San Pedro’s Ports ‘O Call.
