Throning is a term meaning someone wants to date a person not because they actually like or care about them, but because of their social status. Someone could be an influencer, an important or popular figure or someone of (real or perceived) wealth.
USA Today calls it “a toxic new Gen X dating trend.” I’ve seen gold diggers, fake daters and now throners. There are ways to know if someone is throning you and here are five tips to know if it’s happening to you.
1.) The Person Always Wants You To Buy Dinner, Drinks, Pay For Tickets, Etc.
This is the first clue because it shows they expect you to pay for everything. Normally, the man will cover most of these costs anyway but be on high alert when the person says things like, “well you have money,” “buy me (such and such),” or “take me to (a concert or event).”
2.) The Relationship Is All About Them
You’re being throned if the person makes the relationship all about them with little attention being paid to you, your needs or your interests.
3.) You’re Always Doing Things They Want To Do Instead Of Consulting You
This is kind of an extension of the previous point but if you’re always doing something that person wants to do and you feel you are just a sideshow, then you are probably being throned. If you never, or rarely do something you want to do, or if the person whines and complains when you’re doing something you want to do then that’s another sign you are being throned.
4.) The Person Is More Interested In What You Own Than In You
The person focuses on the car you drive, the furnishings in your house or your apartment, your clothes, your shoes (girls notice your shoes, guys), your belongings and the size of the watch you wear if you are a man. Things like that are all signs that the person cares more about your belongings, your status and your money than about you as a person.
5.) You’re Dating A High Maintenance Person
This is the worst kind of person to date. Everything is always about them, they whine when they don’t get what they want, they need constant attention and so forth, then my advice is to pull the rip cord immediately and get the heck out of there.
