‘How Good It Would Be To Hold You Again’

As us single people go bouncing through relationships, like a boat skipping over waves, we are eventually slowed by that one powerful swell that we cannot easily overcome.
It swamps the boat, dousing us with the cold chill of reality that our uninhibited ride through bachelor (of bachelorette) heaven could end at any time. It is at the same time both scary and exciting.
And then, just as suddenly as it appeared, it moves on and all you’re left with are memories. And it’s hard to get those memories out of your mind.
I have a girl like that, and I think everyone does who has ever dated for any length of time. It’s the person you can never quite get out of your mind, the one whom you let get away but would now like to reel back in like a fish. But she’s no longer on the line and you can’t help but think of her from time to time.
I call her my “Coast Of Marseilles” girl based on the song popularized by Jimmy Buffett. In the song, a person goes to this port city in the South of France to forget about a girl but just can’t do it.
My thoughts came by like wind through my hand
How good it’d be to hold you
How good it’d be to feel like that again
There’s nothing wrong with this, of course. It’s not like I sit and stare at the ocean for endless days, dreaming of dating her again to the ignorance of everything else around me. Life is too way grand for that – look forward, not backward I like to say.
It’s just that there are times when I still think of her and that’s simply a part of processing the dating process. And I never feel like the guy in this ending to that beautiful song (thank goodness):
When I left the coast of Marseilles
I hadn’t done what I’d come to do
I spent all the money I’d saved
And still did not get over you
I’ve never been to the Coast Of Marseilles but I know of a girl who makes me think of it from time to time. And I bet you do, too.
