Luau Larry Is The Biggest Rum Expert The Blogger Knows In The World

I’m wondering why my good friend Luau Larry is not being featured at this event.
It’s the Miami Rum Renaissance Festival and it has a tasting competition and an “Ask The Rum Expert” element.
Well, Luau Larry is the biggest rum expert I know, and while I’m sure those on the panel are standouts, it’s hard to believe they know more about rum than Luau. And I’m positive they can’t make a better rum drink than him.
He should be on stage at the 2013 event, taking place April 20-21 at the Doubletree hotel by the Miami Airport. Special room rates are a reasonable $129 but it must be pointed out that there is nothing else by the Miami Airport, so you are looking at about a $50 cab ride to South Beach.
Then again, with more than 200 rums at the Grand Tasting, there’s not a lot of incentive to go to South Beach, or anywhere else for those two days in Miami.
The Grand Tasting cost $50 per day and lasts longer than the three hours you get at wine festivals. It also doesn’t start until noon and goes until 7 p.m. With that schedule you can wake up leisurely in the late morning and get a good base with a big lunch, which is very important when you’re going to be drinking for several hours.
Here’s a sampling of the rums that are at the Grand Tasting, most of which are from the Caribbean: Diplomatico, Prichard’s, Debonaire, Santa Teresa, Plantation, Papa’s Pilar, Abuelo, Bacardi, Miami Club Rum, Serralles (DonQ) and several rums from Puerto Rico.
Now if you really like rum – like Luau Larry – and have the time you can make a week of it. Starting on the 15th, there are rum-themed events hosted by the rum companies at locations around Miami. These feature rums, food, music and island culture.
