You can’t hardly take a step without running into one. Or literally bumping into one, for they are on the sidewalks along the streets throughout the city. There are markets for shopping, eating and even flowers.
This is a guide to the top markets in Bangkok and where to get the best bargains in the sprawling city.
1. Chatuchak Weekend Market – This is one of the largest markets in the world. Covering an area of about 35 acres and holding more than 8,000 shops, it sells almost everything you can imagine. It is most famous for its antiques, furniture, ceramics and souvenirs. If you wish to bring something truly Thai, get some handicrafts (obviously after bargaining). This is also the best place in Bangkok to experience the city’s amazing street foods.
2. Talad Rot Fai Srinakarin Night Market – This is a paradise for vintage lovers. You get myriads of high–quality vintage items. Even if you are not into collecting vintage items to showcase into your home or office, you should visit this huge market. It will be more fun than visiting a museum. It also has a night food market.
3. Pak Klong Talat Flower Market – If not anything else you should visit this market for its enchanting aroma. It is called a flower market, but you can get all sorts of vegetables and fruits in addition to the flowers. This market is open 24 hours so you can visit at any time. But, try not to go at dawn or early morning because they are the busiest hours.
4. Klong Toey Fresh Market – This fresh market has a number of shops offering fresh food items as fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, and herbs. But that’s not its limitation. You can also find clothes, shoes, and variety of appliances here. But, be sure you don’t buy anything without bargaining on the price.
5. Bangkok Farmers Market – Okay, this one is not a permanent arrangement, but, it deserves to be listed here because of its uniqueness. The market is organized on every first and third weekend at a particular place. Farmers, food producers, and artists gather at one place to sell organic products. In addition to fruits, vegetables, foods, and drinks you can get organic cosmetic products, homemade stuff, clothes and shoes. Organic cosmetics are good to bring back provided you can bargain and get it on a reasonable price.
6. Pratunam Market – Fed up of bargaining? Move to Pratunam market. Obviously, bargaining works here too, but, it is a market where you get things at wholesale price, so they are always affordable. You can fill your backpack with dresses, handbags, accessories, jewelry and almost everything else.
7. Dalat Rot Fai – If you wish to get out of your foreign tourist’s attire and get mingled in the local Thais of Bangkok, don’t miss a chance to visit Dalat Rot Fai. This is a market that is focused on the localities rather than the foreigners. So, it gives you a good chance to peep into the fashion trends, likes and dislikes of the locals.
