Travel Blogger Teased But Not Pleased With Cold, Winter Conditions

“Life’s A Beach.”
“No Bad Days At The Beach.”
These popular slogans paint a picture of being in bikinis or board shorts, of funnin’ and sunning, frolicking in the water in a warm and inviting location.
And yes, a beach can be all that and more, but sometimes it can also be a tease. Give you a “come hither” look only to give you a cold chill.
And it is that cold chill that can sometimes make the beach a frustrating place to be, for it looks so inviting and may even be sunny, but in reality a cold wind is blowing off the ocean and stepping outside can suddenly make you feel as if you’e at a ski resort.
That’s what happened to me one lost weekend in Southern California. The sun was out and the beach appeared to be warm, but in reality it was chilly. So cold that hardly anybody was out on the bike path, the beach volleyball courts were empty (a rare occurrence in these parts) and the moment I stepped outside, I immediately retreated back inside.
I even watched the sunset from behind closed sliding glass doors. Normally I’m outside soaking in every beautiful moment of it.
The temperature this January weekend wasn’t too bad; it was about 60F. So now, it wasn’t in the teens or single digits, I didn’t have get all bundled up to go get the mail and I could not see my breath.
But the chilly wind made things cold and again, I was at the beach where – with the sun out – it looked like a great day to be working on my suntan, riding a bike and enjoying the beach lifestyle.
That was the frustrating part. It was right there but it was too cold to enjoy it.
I know, I can feel your sympathy for me. I can hear you mocking me for whining. And I know by the time you read this it will probably be 70 again and i’ll be back to enjoying the beach.
But I’m just telling you that sometimes, the beach can tease as well as it can please.
