Travel Blogger Relaxes With The Warming Sun & A Local Craft Beer

By Kevin Wilkerson, PubClub.com Travel Blogger
It was late on a Sunday afternoon in November, a warm day fading into a cool Carmel evening, with the sun gradually losing its intensity as it began its decent into the Pacific Ocean.
I was sitting on the back balcony of the Hofsas House hotel and had every intention of watching the sunset from the white-sand beach of Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA.
But my legs would not move and my brain gave them no encouragement.
I was drinking a tall, cold and excellent local beer – a Mad Otter Ale from nearby craft brewer Monterey Brewing Company – that the hotel’s owner, a person so friendly I refer to her as “Aunt Carrie,” had kindly left in my in-room refrigerator.
She must have sensed I would drink it at that precise time, and at that moment.

I had just returned from a leisurely drive along the jaw-dropping California coastline of Big Sur (the scenery starts mere minutes from Hofsas House), something so gorgeous and peaceful it requires moments of reflection upon returning to the hotel.

After I pulled the beer out of the fridge I pulled up a chair on my room’s long, wooden balcony. My view was of a blue sky and sparkling ocean through the trees of Carmel.
As the sun inched lower and lower, I kept telling myself I needed to get up and head down to the ocean, but the beer was great, I had Jimmy Buffett music playing in the background and the fading sun was warming me like one of those cozy Hofsas House blankets.
I did not wish to move and neither would you have, either. I was in a perfect moment in a perfect place.

The beer provided me with a nice, slight buzz and after I slowly transferred it from the bottle into my system until no drop was left, I pushed myself out of the chair and made my way through town and down to the beach.

I joined a couple hundred other people, many of whom were sitting on logs, tree stumps and the sand. I arrived just as the sun was on the horizon, perfect timing to take in this moment of nature.
Later, after a wonderful and relaxing dinner at Artemis Turkish Kitchen (accompanied by a Turkish beer and some Turkish wines), I went back to the Hofsas House, where I was warmed by another heat source: the in-room fireplace.
