Canadian Vortex Sends Snow To Napa & Freezing Temperatures To Southern California

I walked outside the other morning and it was so cold, I had to look around me make sure I was not at a ski resort.
I did not know what the temperature was but I saw a story on the news that it was supposed to be below freezing in Riverside and that it snowed in Napa Valley. Snow in Napa? The land of famous California wines was now able to make ice wines, like the wine countries in British Columbia and Niagara-By-The-Lake.
According to weather reports, this unusual (and, my experience living in California) unprecedented cold snap is due to a Canadian vortex. Well let me just tell the Canadians to keep their vortexes north of the border and away from us here in California. Especially Southern California.
You see, we’re not used to this kind of cold. To us, it’s bitter cold when it’s below 60 and the wind is blowing; anything below that is FREEZING.
My apartment became so cold overnight that when I got out of bed in the morning it was like walking into a freezer. When I stepped outside, I nearly went back inside to go get my skis. If I’m going to be that cold, then I expect to be on the slopes.
And we do have slopes here, as close as 2 1/2 hours from the beach. The coldest I’ve ever been in my life was on a chairlift at Big Bear, and I bet I could surpass that chill were I to be there this week.
Next up is more rain, which has been pounding us mercilessly all of 2019. The forecast calls for it to be raining all the following week.
In this land of the endless summer, I am now hoping new the winter weather is going to end soon. Otherwise I – and many long-time residents – may not make it to summer.
Cheers!
