Lancaster, CA, Has More Than You Think For A Quick SoCal Road Trip

Well, I missed the singing cowboy.
I’m not quite sure how; I was with our group of fellow travel writers and bloggers at the Antelope Valley Indian Museum and apparently did not hear an announcement that the cowboy was singing by the campfire.
If you read my preview post on this trip (and if you didn’t, why not!?), you will note seeing the singing cowboy was one of my anticipated highlights on this weekend getaway from Los Angeles to Lancaster, CA.
But what actually turned out to be highlights – as is so often the case when we travel, right – were other things in and around Lancaster, a city an hour and a half from Los Angels in the Southern California high desert.known primarily for its once highly-secretive USAF airplane testing.
And that was the food.
I had two sensational meals while in Lancaster, one at the Broken Bit steakhouse and the other a champagne filled (and I mean champagne-filled) Sunday brunch at Don Sal’s on the strip of restaurants, bars, and businesses known as The Blvd.

Let me just say that the Don Sal’s brunch is worth a weekend getaway from LA on its own. You could build a whole trip around it, especially when you don’t feel like driving all the way to Vegas, Santa Barbara or are seeking something in the desert other than Palm Springs. It has unique food from old-time Mexican family recipes, tall plastic towers of bottomless mimosas and even a mariachi band.
The trip began with a visit to an ostrich farm, which is interestingly enough called the Quail Run Ostrich Ranch. It’s outside of town and has several of those big, odd-looking flightless birds. You should see the size of the eggs those ostrich’s lay; they can feed 12 people! An added bonus was our host. He had the kind of rough look and healthy beard you would expect from someone who works on an ostrich ranch.

We saw more animals at the Feline Conservation Center (including a couple of tigers that stood up on their back paws and leaned into the fence facing us, which was quite an impressive sight and something I’ve never seen on animal TV shows), the aforementioned Indian museum, and the Museum of Art & History (MOHA).
And what trip to Lancaser would be complete without a drive over the musical road!? This is a piece of pavement with grooves in it that when you drive over it “plays” the William Tell Overture.
Oddly, enough – for PubClub.com certainly – I did not make it to any of the bars. I really like the Pour ‘d Vino wine bar on The Blvd., Instead, I shared some wine in the comfortable Hampton Inn & Suites with a couple of fun people on the trip.
I again left Lancaster satisfied, and that’s the sign it was a good trip.
Cheers!
