Who dat!?

It’s the Saints and the city of New Orleans, which are hosting the NFC Championship game on Sunday, Jan. 20, against the LA Rams.

And it’s going to be a party like Mardi Gras in the Big Easy.

If you want a fun destination to travel to the third week of January, make it New Orleans.

New Orleans locals love their Saints. They have a passion for them unlike any other fans because the bonded with their team and players after Hurricane Katrina. It’s different than fans of, say, the Pittsburgh Steelers or Dallas Cowboys, who are conditioned from decades of success to bleed their team’s colors. The Saints have a much longer history of being bad than being good, so when the Saints are winning, it gets the people’s Cajun blood bubbling like a pot of gumbo on the stove.

I was in New Orleans for the Saints’ first game of the year. And while I found the tailgate scene somewhat lacking in all-out wildness, that’s not likely to be the case. After all, this is not just the playoffs, it’s win and go to the Super Bowl!

There’s no set tailgate area although once your ticket is scanned, there’s a large plaza with stations and a couple of bars to get drinks. But heck, this is New Orleans and you can drink in the streets, so many people simply walk around the areas near the stadium.

I will say that inside the Superdome, it was almost like a college game-day experience. The crowd was loud. Very loud. That’s one reason it’s such a difficult place to play for visiting NFL teams.

The beginning of the games are cool. Officials turn down the lights, pump up the music and one by one, the Saints players run onto the field to rising pyrotechnics. Even if you’re not a Saints fan, it will give you a few chills up the spine.

Before and after the game there is, of course, the French Quarter and Bourbon Street.

So even if the Saints don’t win, it’s a winning situation for travelers.
