Another Sunny Day In Southern California

Well that was a bummer – it did not rain after all in Los Angeles!
Okay, it wasn’t really a bummer. I’m glad it did not rain. But the day I posted that it was raining, it actually wasn’t; I was simply looking at the salivating weather people on TV who were anxiously predicting a mad rush of water drenching Southern California.
I should have known better. Half the time weather forecasters predict rain it never arrives and even if it does, it’s mostly lightly scattered over the entire L.A. basin.
In fact – and this is kind of funny – as I was wrapping up this blog post focused on how rain here is big news – the sun came out here in Hermosa Beach.
I fell for the forecast this time because there was a hurricane coming up the Pacific from Baja. It was no threat to make landfall – never is, here, and that fact is sure to make people in Florida, Texas and North Carolina pack up and move here – but it was predicted to bring a full day of showers to the entire area.
It did rain north of Los Angeles, in Ventura County. But all Los Angeles got were a few brief and very scattered showers. Many places received no rain.
This had some people bummed out because one of the fun things to do in Los Angeles when it rains is to turn on the news and watch all the “Storm Watch (insert year)” on the local TV stations. It’s pretty amusing to see these reports and “team coverage.”
Not all of it is producers, reporters and camera people trying to make something out of nothing, tho. When truly heavy rains come here, usually in January and February, it can case massive mudslides, and deadly ones as we witnessed earlier this year. So I’m not making fun of anyone.
I’m just saying that when you live here for a while you actually look forward to the coverage of the rain because most of it is a brief drenching that causes no harm.
Don’t worry about the rain if you’re traveling here. Los Angeles averages 325 days of sunshine a year. But if it does rain, don’t be bummed. Just turn on the TV!
Cheers,
