Look For Free Street Fairs When Traveling In The USA

Ahh, summer in America.
It means hot days and warm nights, baseball games, vacations at the beach and weekends at the lake (ideally, a friend or neighbor has a boat).
And it also means festivals. Lots and lots of festivals.
Nearly eery town in America, no matter the size, has some type of festival in the summertime. Some are huge events featuring big-time bands and tens of thousands of people but mostly these are free events featuring local musicians (some good, some bad, some “the more you drink, they better they sound”), booths selling clothes and other stuff and a lemonade and food stands.
One of the top places for these street festivals in San Francisco, which seems to have one nearly every weekend.
We have three of these where I live, in the Los Angeles South Bay Beach Cities. And they are all over the other small towns that comprise the greater LA area.
I like them because they are come-as-you-are casual and give the area’s single and fun people a central gathering place to party on a weekend afternoon. We usually know people in at least a couple of the bands that are playing and there’s always a beer garden.
Plus, they are free, which is always nice, especially in this day and age of mega music festivals that cost hundreds of dollars to attend. You’re also not committed to it all day and into the night and “stuck” in a remote location. At the small street festivals, you can come and go as you please and they take far less logistical planning to attend than major music events.
In fact, I’m headed to one now. It’s a Saturday afternoon and a friend’s band is playing in the beer garden. Some friends are already there, no doubt having already spent a considerable amount of time in the beer garden.
If you’re traveling in America in the summertime, ask if there’s one of these festivals taking place while your in town. It will really enhance your trip.
Cheers!
