‘No, I Need The Exact Address To Go To That Party’

Here’s an example of how people rely too much on apps when traveling – and this was only local travel.
An acquaintance texted me on a Saturday morning to inquire if anything fun were happening that day or night (I’m kind of the center of social knowledge around here). As a matter of fact, I replied, a friend was having a house party BBQ later that afternoon. Why don’t you stop by and join us?
That sounded great, she messaged, so I told her of the location. It was right next to a well-known restaurant in the area. But that information was not good enough for her. She wanted the address so she could put it in an app on her phone.
Well I did not know the danged address so I told her it was the only house next to the restaurant. “You can’t miss it,” I texted.
“Well,” she replied, “I don’t feel comfortable in going if I don’t know the exact address.”
What!? How about this – why don’t you go to that restaurant, look for a house next to it and when you see a bunch of people on the patio having a BBQ, that’s the place!
Geez. I swear, I wonder how some people function on a daily basis. I have another friend who won’t use a public restroom unless he checks them out on Yelp. I do a lot of Twitter travel chats and at least every other week there’s a question about “which apps do you use when traveling?”
The answers astonish me. People use them for driving for walking and heck, for finding out how to use the toilet it their hotel room, it seems.
Now you can accuse me of being old fashioned (not true) or stubborn (I am) but mainly, I am independent, and independent people don’t want to rely on apps to do everything for them. We use them to assist us but we don’t use them as a crutch.
And if somebody invites me to a party and gives me every possible landmark I’ll need to get there, I certainly don’t require the exact address to find it. In fact, as an independent person I don’t even want the address, for I feel if I can’t find it using my brain and wits, I don’t deserve to be there in the first place.
Cheers!
