Defining Americans’ Summertime Traveling Habits

It’s summertime and in the USA, that means people are loading up the suitcases with way more crap than they need and headed to that annual rite of the American life: the summer vacation.
Where Americans go on vacation largely depends on where the live.
Florida Is America’s Top Summertime Vacation Destination
People from the South – where I’m from originally – go almost exclusively to Florida. Most Southerners don’t live at the beach yet it’s in the DNA to like the beach, and Florida offers the closest opportunity for most people.
Plus, Florida is great for families because it’s so set up with cool “Florida-ish” things as I call them, such as alligator parks, putt-putt golf (or goofy golf if you prefer) and all kinds of attractions and activities. I’ll tackle theme parks later in this column.
Florida is also a vacation destination among people from the Midwest. Especially those from Michigan. If you’re ever in Florida in the summertime, check out all the license plates on cars from Michigan.
The Theme Parks
Several people build their vacations around the theme parks. In Florida, this means they don’t go near the beach but to Orlando.
The theme parks also are a big reason Los Angeles is a summertime tourist destination. Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios and Warner Bros., are all theme park destinations in L.A.
Personally, I have never had much desire to spend my free time boiling hot waiting in long lines just to get on a ride.
Americans Taking European Travel Vacations
Most Americans travel within America on their summer vacation. That’s because Americans are, for the most part, stay-at-home travelers.
Only people from three areas travel abroad for their summer vacations. They are from California, Chicago and New York City. People here are more international in their mindset and you’ll see them scattered about the European continent.
Californians are especially broad in their travel. Most could not even tell you where Florida is located but they will tell you of some dot on the map in France, Italy or even Croatia where they visited and loved.
So where Americans travel for their summer vacation really depends on where they are from, and no matter where they are from, they are out in force in the summertime.
Cheers!
