Driving To Walker’s Cafe Through The ‘Big Sur Of Southern California’

It was such a nice day – 70-something degrees and literally not a cloud in the sky – that I decided to leave the beach and take a drive along the California coast.
There’s so many options to the north and the south of me here in Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles County that I could literally decide based on which way my car is facing when parked on the street.
But on this day, being a Friday, I did not want to get caught up in end-of-week traffic so I did the quick and easy thing: I took a road trip to Palos Verdes for lunch.
Palos Verdes is a gorgeous place with huge cliffs plunging into blue sea below it. The views are so stunning, I refer to it as “the Big Sur of Southern California.”

Most people from this area would immediately assume that I landed at Terranea Resort, the high-end hotel with a high-end restaurant that overlooks the ocean from a perch high above the Pacific.
But that’s not in my budget, especially for lunch. No, I drove on, beyond Palos Verdes into San Pedro and around – you have to go around, for the road is still washed out – to a place called Walker’s Cafe.

This is a little joint with biker motorcycles out front across from the cliff at Point Fermin Park and its small lighthouse.
Walker’s Cafe is the kind of place I like for lunch. With signs saying things like “Bullshit Blvd.,” a menu on a board with the items written in paint, a small counter and tight tables, it’s got character.
It also has very good food, such as the meatloaf sandwich with potato salad on the side. It also has good burgers but they are “tweener” in size, meaning they are not quite big enough to fill you with one but two is too much.
I ordered the meatloaf sandwich and potato salad and took a seat inside, tho I was tempted to go out to one of the small tables on its sidewalk. I could have also taken it to a picnic table in Point Fermin’s park, but I wanted to soak in all the character of Walker’s while I was at it.
Belly full and palate satisfied, I stretched and got back in the car to make a slow drive back to Hermosa. After all, why hurry when you don’t have to – that’s a mantra of mine when traveling.
And yes, this was traveling even tho it was a short road trip. That’s because while it lasted only about four hours, it was like being on holiday in another place.
Road Trip Travel Tip: You may need a car tracking device to record the data of location, speed, time, etc. It also prevents your vehicle from being stolen.
