An LA Day In May – Life’s A Beach

After several days of what we in Los Angeles call “Gray May,” today I woke up to sunshine. The sky is blue and while I’m sure some clouds will roll in, it’s always nice to be greeted by gorgeous morning.
I also was welcomed to the new day by the familiar sound of thump-thump of beach volleyballs being hit on a court on the sand. To counter this pleasant feeling, I also heard hammers and drills coming from the mad rush of construction on new multi-million-dollar homes being built here in Hermosa Beach, CA. Our once-quiet beach community is now a construction zone.
But back to more pleasant things. I walked out onto the beach to snap a photo for this post and it’s always nice to get sand between the toes. Here, one can spend as much time barefoot as wearing shoes (or flip flops). It’s that kind of community.
After participating in the #CultureTrav Twitter chat, I went for a noon run along The Strand. Just as I passed the pier, the crew that has been filming the past two days in The Deck was taking a break. What have they been filming? A movie? A scene for a TV show? A commercial?
I’m taking an educated guess and saying a movie. And it will be one scene that will last about 30 seconds in the film. Shooting movies is a loooong process, folks.
I also passed a group of ladies – five wide – pushing baby strollers. As I went past them, I smelled … a cigar! I found it hard to believe that a mother in Hermosa Beach would be smoking a cigar, let alone in a group with strollers. But I only smelled it when I passed them, so what else am I to think?
Next up: a bike ride to Manhattan Beach. An eye-challenged friend needs constant help to read his e-mails and regular mail so he can pay some of his bills.
As locals know, this is a nice nice four-mile bike ride along The Strand, a concrete path that runs parallel to the beach from Redondo Beach to the south all the way past the Santa Monica pier more than a dozen miles to the north.
It’s a great way to get around the area and if you’re even in the area and to experience it, I give tours, so leave a comment here for me and I’ll arrange it with you.
Tonite, it’s “Thirsty Thursday” and if I want to go out mixing & mingling among the Hermosa Beach singles, you can likely find me at American Junkie on the Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza because it has a very good large pizza for $5 tonite and $3 beers and cocktails at Happy Hour, which goes until 7.
So there’s nothing earth-shattering happening today but it doesn’t always have to be because for PubClub.com, Life’s A Beach!
