Why It’s Time To Pull Off The Masks When Traveling In America Right Now

Vaccinated Travelers Deserve To Travel Without Wearing A Mask And The Others, Well, The Heck With Them

After traveling nearly across the country – San Diego to Nashville and back – in early June, I have come to a couple of conclusions.

One, people are traveling again. Airplanes are packed (there was not one empty seat on all four of my Southwest Airlines flights), airports are crowded and pretty much everything is the same as it was before the COVID-19 shutdowns.

Secondly, it’s time for the U.S. government to remove the masks requirement for travelers in airports and on airplanes. Here’s why.

• Americans Are Getting Vaccinated

I have had both shots and so have more than 60% of Americans. The goal is 70% by the Fourth of July. I’m pretty much protected and so are the other vaccinated travelers. Positive case rates and hospitalizations have plummeted since the vaccinations have become readily available and the virus is – for at least the time being – no longer a major threat to people in the USA.

• Masks Are Unnecessary For Vaccinated Travelers

Masks are uncomfortable and restrictive and they are unnecessary for us vaccinated people. In my travels, I wore a mask for some 10 straight hours in airports, during layovers and on planes. It’s a long time to wear a mask. Especially when you are sitting on a plane waiting for it to take off before the air conditioner kicks into full gear.

• To Heck With Those Who Refuse To Get Vaccinated

This may seem callous but it’s true. If 60-70% of Americans care enough to get vaccinated then why should we bow to the 30-40% who refuse to do it? We’ve done our part and should not suffer the discomforts of a mask because a relatively few number of others don’t choose to do it.

Getting vaccinated is now a lot easier than making a flight reservation. In many places you can just show up and get a shot without an appointment. For free.

If people refuse to get vaccinated and get COVID as a result of traveling and being around un-masked people, well, that’s too just bad for them.

Conclusion

With everything in place it’s time to remove the mask requirements in airports and on airplanes when traveling in America. This should be done now before the super-busy summer travel season.
