Of Airports, Airlines And Why Isn’t Anyone Smiling?

I love being home for the holidays with my family. The problem, tho, is getting there.
You see, I live in Southern California and my family is in Tennessee. And that means boarding flights and, well, holiday travel. That’s the part where I say “bah humbug.”
Oh, I start out in a good mood. It’s just that outside factors quickly turn me into Ebinizer Scrooge.
For starters, everyone is in a testy mood. Passengers, airline gate staff, flight crew, security, everyone. I always find this puzzling. Isn’t the holidays the time for giving, showing compassion for your fellow human, that sort of thing? Not when it comes to holiday travel.
Secondly, my flights are always late. Always. The flight crew and airline seems not to care that they have inconvenienced passengers as well as family and friends waiting on the other end to meet myself (and other delayed passengers) at the airport. This always annoys me. Bah humbug.
Because my family is in Knoxville, TN – a mid-sized Southern city and home to the University of Tennessee, by the way – I have to take two flights. And making my connection is always a concern.
This year, I only have half an hour to get to my second flight. It’s in Detroit and on the eve of my trip, I’m having visions of being late out of San Diego, sweating it on the journey to Detroit while hoping that somehow I will be able to make the connection, impatiently tapping my foot while it takes fellow passengers forever to get their crap out of the overhead bins and start moving off the plane, then making a mad dash through the airport to the gate, only to arrive and discover the flight departed five minutes earlier without me.
You can tell from my description that I have been through this in the past.
That would mean sitting around the airport for two to three hours waiting on the next flight. And do you think the airline would let me relax in its lounge or give me a little money for a meal? Heck no.
Bah humbug.
Eventually, I do make it home and that’s when bah humbug turns into Merry Christmas.
