Travel Blogger Daily Blog: It’s Raining In L.A., And Here It’s Big News

A Rainy Day In Los Angeles But Wait, Now The Sun Is Out Here…

The lead story on all the Los Angeles television stations this early-fall day is a big one here in L.A.

It’s raining.

Actually, it’s been the big news all week – reporters and weather people talking about the rain that’s coming to Los Angeles.

It’s such a rare thing that whenever there is rain, it’s treated as if it’s the Jamestown Flood. Teams of reporters are sent out all over the city to report on the falling water. The producers develop dramatic-looking “STORM WATCH (insert year here)” graphics.

And if there’s not enough rain at a location to actually report on, well, no problem! The cameramen point their camera at storm drains to catch video of rushing water.

The weather people love it because it gives them something to talk about other than “well yesterday was sunny and 75, today is sunny and 75, tomorrow is sunny and 75 and the 5-day forecast calls for sunshine with a temperature of 75 degrees.”

They do this because the people in Los Angels are fascinated by rain. I’m already on record as writing that people never go out to restaurants and bars when it’s raining in L.A. They also lose their ability to drive, slowing down as if a monsoon is about to hit.

The freeways are at more of a standstill than usual and the surface streets are even worse.

People dash in and out of grocery stores with their head covered as if they are boarding a helicopter.

Now here’s something funny. As I’m writing this blog post, the sun just came out so maybe we won’t get any rain after all.

I can only imagine how disappointed the weather reporters must be now. But the beach volleyball players, surfers and other Southern California outdoor lifestyle lovers love it because they can continue their daily “California Dreamin’ ” life.

Cheers!
