One of the top Los Angeles nightlife experiences is going to the Magic Castle in Hollwood.
This truly magical place features the world’s best magicians performing close-up magic in intimate small rooms and “Irma,” a person-less piano in the lobby who magically plays any song people ask while waiting to get into the shows. For decades it has been THE place for top magicians to perform – the mantra is once they have been at the Magic Castle they have “made it” in the profession – and it is a great thrill for people who experince it.
The problem is, you have to be invited to the Magic Castle by a member or a magician. You just can’t show up there, so it’s a rare treat to experience it. I have been fortunate enough to have been there a few times, once with my parents when they visited me in L.A. My mother still talks with amazement about Irma – “I mean she plays everything!”
But now, there is a sure-fire way to go the Magic Castle. Simply book a cruise on the new Princess Cruises Sun Princess, for it has a replica of the Hollywood club on the ship. Called Spellbound, it will be a part of the on-board entertainment when Sun Princess launches in early 2024.
“We are excited to introduce Spellbound by Magic Castle and take the art of magic around the world aboard the spectacular new Sun Princess,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “This collaboration with The Magic CastleTM takes entertainment into new dimensions with an extraordinary experience that combines the allure of magic with the thrill of cruising. Spellbound will become an iconic guest favorite on Sun Princess.”
Erika Larsen, president of Magic Castle Enterprises, said “we are bringing some of the most authentic aspects of The Magic Castle in Hollywood to Sun Princess, complete with incredible magicians and illusionists, so that Princess guests can experience a taste of the world class magic that is showcased nightly at the Magic Castle. It’s an exciting opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in a magical experience typically reserved exclusively for members and their guests.”

Magic Castle on the Sun Princess is almost exactly like the real thing. It has a lobby with a “cousin” of Irma – Isabella – on piano and small rooms where close-up magic is performed. The featured Parlor Bar has a beautiful art piece featuring Artemis the owl, which can only be revealed after guests enjoy time with talented artists. And in the intimate 30-seat, Spellbound theater, 30-minute performances of close-up magic will be performed nightly.
Spellbound will make its debut aboard Sun Princess in February 2024. More details about operating hours and pricing will be made at a later date. Images can be found here.
Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will offer an array of new entertainment and activity offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories.
And you don’t have be invied to go to the Magic Castle.
