Consistency And Comfort In Carmel-By-The-Sea
When you travel, there’s one thing you want from your hotel.
And that’s consistency.
Consistency in quality, consistency in service, consistency in amenities such as reliable WiFi and consistency in the hotel itself. A lot of the latter comes down to management, and when a place has high turnover or undergoes several ownership changes, it can be frustrating because you are never sure what you’re going to get when you arrive.
That’s one thing you certainly don’t have to worry about at the Hofsas House hotel in Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. It is as consistent as the waves rolling to shore a few blocks away, as reliable as a good glass of Monterey County wine.
Hofas House – located a mere two-to-three minute walk from all the charming shops, stores, restaurants, bars and wine tasting locations in Carmel in a super-quiet location on upper San Carlos Street – has been owned by the same family for 70 years.
Carrie Theis – “Aunt Carrie,” I call her – is the daughter of the original owner. I have stayed at least a half dozen times at Hofas House and each time I know precisely what will be waiting for me upon arrival and when I’m in the room.
And that is to say a staff that acts as if I’m a member of their family back for another visit to their home (even tho there may be someone behind the deck I’ve not previously met), a room that’s more apartment-like than hotel-ish, a warming fireplace, the signature dutch doors, a nice balcony on which to relax with a glass of wine or a local craft beer, a reliable Internet connection that I don’t have to worry about, super-soft bath towels and wash clothes, and a daily breakfast that includes fresh orange juice, croissants, muffins and fruit.
Yet there’s always something different too, which keeps every trip here as fresh as the flowers in front of the hotel. Each Hofas House room is unique; no two are quite the same. I like that little adventure in not knowing exactly what configuration awaits me when I open the door.
It’s always wonderful, of course, and comforting because the consistency of Hofas House makes me feel as if I’m returning to a family member’s home.
Which in a way, I am, and that is something every traveler needs when it comes to a hotel.
