Will ‘Mobilemoons’ Be The Next Hot Travel Trend?
I’m sure glad I don’t have their friends.
According to a survey by Expedia, one-third of Americans prefer to travel solo with just their cell phone than with a travel companion.
Expedia’s first Solo Travel Report states that “when given the ultimatum to choose between their mobile phone or a travel companion to bring on their next trip, one-third (33%) of Americans said they would choose to travel solo with just their device.”
It also revealed that 60% of travelers plan to take a solo trip within the next two years.
Expanding on the buzzwords “buddymoons” and “babymoons,” Expedia has coined the term “mobilemoons” to describe what could be the next big trend in travel.
The survey was conducted to promote the Expedia app, and here are some of its other findings:
• 5% of travelers who said a movie prompted them to take a solo trip
• 82% of the parents in the survey said they would like to travel alone at some point in the future
• 83% of Gen Z and 80% of Millennials like the idea of traveling alone in order to meet new people (apparently, they don’t feel as if they can’t meet people if they are with a friend for some reason)
• A weekend trip is the preferred solo travel experience (30%), followed by a tropical destination or a beach (23%), a foodie trip (16%) or an event-related trip such as a music festival (14%)
• 74% say their ideal location is in the USA followed by Canada (45%) and Europe (42%)
• 29% dread having their phone battery die or eating alone.
The results were from an on-line survey conducted by CITE Research with 2,521 respondents – 1,516 in the US and 1,005 in Mexico. Respondents screened were aged 18 years or older, had taken a trip by themselves in the past or planned to take a one in the future. Expedia defined solo travel as doing any form of travel – taking a flight, boat, train, driving themselves, staying in a hotel or vacation rental, etc. in which the person is by themselves.
