Sleep is one of the most neglected parts of a healthy lifestyle for many adults. The pressures of work, family and a social life can leave you with little time for one of the most essential things in a daily routine: sleep. If you are finding that you are depressed, worn out or sick frequently, you are likely not allowing your body the time it needs to heal through sleep.
Sleep is Essential for Health
The hours when you are asleep are the part of the day where you body is free to repair itself. Injuries, illnesses and stress are all dealt with during the hours that your body is sleeping. If you do not allow your body those hours to recover, you could be inviting lasting health problems into your life.
Another fact about sleep that many people are unaware of if that sleep allows your brain to rest and heal as well. If you are suffering from a lack of concentration or if you are feeling stressed and despondent, your body is likely not getting enough sleep for your brain to recover from your day. Anxiety and many other mental health concerns are often linked to a lack of sleep.
Adults often complain of being chronically tired, and yet also admit that they only sleep 6 hours a night or less. While your body might have been able to keep up that sort of schedule when you were younger, as you get older, it is harder and harder on your health to burn the candle at both ends.
What if I Really Like to Socialize?
Having fun is an important part of stress management and should also be included in a healthy lifestyle. However, if you are spending more than a couple of nights a week out late drinking, you may be causing more damage to your health than you think.
Drinking daily is linked to many serious health conditions and the carb load that your body has to process after a night of heavy imbibing can lead to weight gain, depression and even more serious conditions like diabetes.
An additional concern for many who party more than a couple of nights a week is the fact that drinking leads to questionable eating habits. To top this off, being hung over in the morning makes it very unlikely that you will get up and go to the gym.
Socializing and going out with friends is healthiest when it is limited to a few nights a week. Make sure that you think about what you eat and how many drinks you have. When you get home, drink water, wash off your make up and take a shower or bath. Caring for your body after a night on the town is just as essential as giving your body the rest that it needs to recover.
Some Other Things to Consider
Always make sure that you are sleeping on a quality mattress (preferably memory foam). If you are not comfortable enough to get deep sleep, you will feel tired even if you are getting enough hours of sleep each night. Make sure that you engage in physical activity a few times a week at minimum. Limit screen time the last half hour before you go to bed so that your brain can calm down and prepare for sleep.
Making sure to balance your social life with your health is a very important skill to learn. If you feel worn out and exhausted every day, make sure that you listen to your body and take a break for a few days from social engagements and other pressures if possible. Putting your health first will make you healthier, happier and allow you to be truly present in your day to day life.
