USC Fires Steve Sarkisian; Now Both Can Start Recovery

Trojans Again Looking For New Coach To Lead Troy

The USC Song Girls look to Fight On again.

The healing has begun, both for the USC football team and for Steve Sarkisian.

USC Athletic Director Pat Haden finally took the right move and fired Sarkisian. This is one day after Sarkisian reportedly was intoxicated in a team meeting and was told not to go to practice, and two months after being inebriated at a major preseason booster event.

Now, the healing for the Trojan football program can begin, as well as the healing of its now  former coach.

“After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and or student athletes, I hav made he decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian immediately,” Haden said in a statement posted on the school’s website.

“I want to thank Clay Helton for stepping into the interim head coach role, and I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation.

“Through all of this we remained concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well being.

Several reports have surfaced about Sarkisian’s drinking while at Washington and as well as shocking behavior this season while at USC, including being intoxicated at team meetings (read meetings, not meeting) and possibly being drunk during a game.

That happened against Arizona State, a surprising blowout win for the Trojans. After that was a pathetic showing by USC in a home loss to Washington on Thursday.

Sarkisian is clearly in need of help and so, too, is the USC football program. This is the best move for both involved.

New coaching candidates are likely to be Chip Kelly, who’s not winning over many Philadelphia Eagles fans, and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham.
