The heat is on in Los Angeles, and not just because the Dodgers haven’t won the World Series since 1988.

It’s because the heat is on in Los Angeles quite literally. The L.A. temperatures for Game 1 reached 103 degrees, which made it the hottest game in World Series history.

The previous high was 94 degrees in 2001 in Phoenix. But that game was played indoors. There had not been a game played outdoors higher than 81 degrees since 1975.

Just about as hot was Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was the winning pitcher in the 3-1 victory.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday and the temperature will again be near the century mark.

Los Angeles is under an Excessive Heat Wave Warning all week, with a high of 101 predicted for Tuesday and 97 on Wednesday, when Game 2 is scheduled at Dodger Stadium. The rest of the week will be in the upper 80s and then the low 80s.

This is due to the hot desert winds, called the Santa Anas, blowing and creating the high temperatures. In some areas, it’s also extremely windy and wind warnings are in effect for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura County to the north thru Wednesday.

These are prime conditions for fires, and recently the so-called Canyon Fire destroyed several homes in Orange County. That’s more than an hour from Dodger Stadium but areas around Dodger Stadium could be susceptible to brush fires.

Still, people in Los Angeles are excited about the World Series. They are wearing Dodger hats and shirts everywhere and the primary talk around town is “Dodgers. Dodgers.”

The last time the Dodgers were in the World Series, they stunned the heavily favored Oakland A’s 4-1 in games. It will be forever be remembered for Kurt Gibson – injured to the point he could barely walk – came off the bench to hit a memorable home run to win in Game 1.

Games 3, 4 and 5 move to Houston, where rain is forecast for Friday and the temperature for Saturday’s Game 4 is to be a bone-chilling 65. At least bone-chilling compared to 100 degrees. Houston’s home, Minute Maid Park, is an outdoor stadium.
