Tide, Clemson, Irish And, Yes, The Dawgs Should Be In CFP
With the regular season now complete, the top four teams are evident and here’s my top 4 teams that should make the College Football Playoff, regardless of what happens in the conference championship games.
The only thing that can change is the placement after the SEC Championship.
1.) Alabama
The Tua Tsunami is unstoppable and so, too, is the Crimson Tide. Plus the defense can be smothering (just ask LSU and Mississippi State) and I can go on and on and on, but Bama is in a different league than just about anybody else in college football. Perhaps there should be a category between college football and the NFL. The Tide would fit in there nicely tho there would be nobody to play, of course.
2.) Clemson
The Tigers could also be in that special league. Although, their pass defense showed considerable vulnerability against an average South Carolina team. That’s something Tua and Bama could exploit, but no other teams, and combine the defensive line with the Clemson offense and you’ve got a powerhouse.
3.) Georgia
Even if Georgia loses to Alabama, it should be in the CFP. It’s is more complete than Ohio State, Oklahoma and even Notre Dame. I’ll put it this way, Georgia would soundly beat the Irish, Buckeyes and Sooners. Yes, there was that one slip-up against LSU and while I can’t explain that performance (other than playing in Death Valley when LSU was really fired up, something the below three teams could not survive) the Dawgs have been dominant the second half of the season.
4.) Notre Dame
Okay, the Irish are 12-0. But remember, they almost lost to Vanderbilt. And Pittsburgh. And were even challenged by USC.
Why Ohio State And Oklahoma Do Not Deserve To Be In The College Football Playoff
Yes, the Buckeyes’ demolition of Michigan was impressive (or was Michigan just that bad). OSU was faster and more determined than the Wolverines. Heck, they put up 62 on UM. But they also struggled immensely during the regular season. They lost to a 6-6 Purdue – in a rout – and should have lost the previous week to 5-7 Maryland. It was also challenged by TCU, only beat Penn State by a point (which seemed impressive at the time but the Nittany Lions have collapsed this season) and Nebraska by five. This is not a playoff-worthy team.
Oklahoma, well it’s not OK for it to be in the playoff. Any team with a defense that bad, and playing defenses as bad as they are in the Big 12, does is not one of the top 4 teams in the nation.
