The Hype is fading for “go for it on 4th down even if it makes no sense” Heupel in Rocky Top; USC fans are getting tired of being Oklahoma West and want to go back to being, well, USC; the nickame “Big Game James” is not exactly something that is being said around State College while Big Blue has been caught red-handed attempting to get an upper hand against the likes of Rutgers and Minnesota.
And can’t Michigan State do anything right?
College football is already into Halloween Weekend games and that, of course, means it’s time for The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
So onto this week’s games. All times Pacific becuase The Prognosticator lives on the West Coast.
Florida State at Wake Forest (9 a.m., ABC)
The Spears won’t be getting a “Wake” up call this Saturday, for they will simply ride into town, attack an overwhelmed opponent and then head back to their Tallahasee tribe headquarters. Wake, as is the case with every other team in the ACC, is simply not good enough to put up much of a fight and only a surpise ambush will keep Chief Osceola and Renegade out of the College Football Playoffs. Winner: Florida State
Oklahoma at Kansas (9 a.m., FOX)
It is not at all possible that the Boomers were looking past the Gus Bussers to Kansas; that does not explain their “geez we nearly blew the season” performance. Interesting enough, the Blue Hawks beat those same pests from Central Florida 51-22 just two weeks ago. Sooners or later, the vulnability of the Venables boys are will cost it a game, and perhaps even more. Winner: Kansas
Georgia vs. Florida, The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktial Party, Jacksonville, FL (12:30 pm., CBS)
The party is on in Jax as some 150,000 fans on both sides converge on the Jacksonville Landing in a scene that a dazed sportswriter, upon arriving into the press box after walking through the scene called it “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.” Unless a few of the Kirbys peel out of the Dawg Walk and into the tailgate party, then it will be the Chompers fans who will be living out the last part of the PubClub.com cheer, “Win Or Lose, We Booze!” Winner: Georgia
Oregon at Utah (12:30 p.m., FOX)
The well-coached Utes are as fancy as a dive bar and as exciting as a light beer, but they manage to keep their fans in high spirits. They certainly create a difficult enviroment for a visiting team and it is into this din of doom come the once-wounded Ducks. The witty Whittingham has defenses that can make good offenses look like Penn State’s against Ohio State and while this will leave the Waddlers and their fans panting throughout the game, they can’t hold them back for four quarters. Winner: Oregon
USC at Cal (1 p.m, Pac-12)
It’s good timing that the Ancient Warriors are out of the Coliseum this week because many Troy fans would not bother to show up to see their struggling team play such a low-level opponent. Traditionally, they would travel to the game because they love spending a weekend in San Francisco, drinking at Balboa Cafe and other bars in the Marina District and having Irish Coffees at the place that created the drink, but neither Cal nor the Trojans are worth the effort this year. The Papa Bears are woeful on offense although they will feast like it’s salmon season againt the “defense” they face. But it won’t be nearly enough to get the W. Winner: USC
Washington at Stanford (4 p.m., FS1)
Poor Stanford. The Trees bloomed on a Friday night in Boulder but have wilted in every other game of the season and now have to face the wrath of a team that came within an opposing coach’s blunder of losing it all. You can bet the Penix Pounders will be out looking to make up for lost touchdowns and will torch the Farm. Winner: Washington
Ohio State at Wisconsin (4:30 p.m., NBC)
Those looking for all-out offense should tune into the other 4:30 game, for Brutus and Bucky will be grinding it out in old Big 10 style. Three yards and a clould of tire pellets. That won’t stop the Madison Maniacs from jumping the entire game and hitting one of the best college town bars before and after the game. Still, the Omnivores are just too Fickle on offense to be able to consistently break the defensive shell of the Nuts. Winner: Ohio State
Colorado at UCLA (4:30 p.m., ABC)
This will be a track meet disguised as a football game, a classic Pac-12 experience in the league’s final year in which the defenses are simply there to put 22 players on the field. The early-season shine of the Neons has dimmed significantly while the Trampolines are their usual up-and-down selves. The Rose Bowl is hardly a menancing place to play for opponents so it’s a foot race to the end zones and eventually to the finish line. Winner: UCLA
