New Rams Stadium In Inglewood Site Of Title Game
On the day the Dodgers were playing in Game 7 in an attempt to win their first World Series in nearly 30 years, Los Angeles scored a big hit in another sport.
The city will be hosting the 2023 college football National Championship game, the final game of the College Football Playoff. The Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission made the announcement.
The game will be played in the new NFL LA Rams (and Chargers) stadium being built now in Inglewood. The stadium will open in 2020.
“As the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles is ready to deliver a College Football Playoff National Championship like no city has ever before,” said Kathryn Schloessman, president of Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission.
“This successful bid reaffirms L.A.’s status as one of the most desirable destinations for hosting global sporting events.”
The Los Angeles Host Committee will organize and lead the event and work closely with the College Football Playoff staff and committee.
“The new stadium and district we are building at Hollywood Park will transform the area into a year-round sports and entertainment destination,” said Stan Kroenke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams.
“We are excited to add the College Football Playoff National Championship to the roster of premier events at our stadium including the Super Bowl and the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympics.”
Los Angeles has hosted BCS Championship games at the Rose Bowl, most notably Texas’ memorable 41-38 upset of previously unbeaten and defending champion USC in which Vince Young scored the winning touchdown with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
It was also the scene where Alabama won its first National Championship at Alabama in a 37-21 win in 2009.
By the time the 2023 game rolls around, Saban could well still be at Alabama.
