Trojans Beat The Bruins And Hire A Coach
Beating the cross-town rival was good not just for the players and fans, but for the coach, too.
After replacing Steve Sarkisian in messy situation, Clay Helton has been hired full time as coach of the Trojans.
It was a quick move, just two days after USC defeated UCLA 40-21, Athletic Director Pat Haden removed the interim tag from Helton.
Helton held the team together through trying times. USC was competitive but ran out of emotional gas in the fourth quarter and lost to Notre Dame, then reeled off four straight wins – the highlight being a 42-24 washout of an over-ranked but still #3 Utah team – enabling the Trojans to finish 8-4.
The lone blemish was a washout of its own, a 48-28 blowout loss to Oregon the week prior to UCLA.
Helton was hired on the basis of the team’s overall performance, but beating the rival sealed the deal for him.
Now, he must prove he can recruit and be a full-time head coach.
