Golf’s Top Draw To Play In Farmers Insurance Open & Genesis LA Open

Tiger Woods has announced he will be playing in two SoCal tournaments, one in San Diego and the other in Los Angeles. He will be playing in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in north San Diego County, Jan. 25-28, and the L.A. Open – now called the Genesis Open – at L.A.’s Riviera Country Club, Feb. 15-18.
Torrey Pines will mark the first time in a year that Woods has played in an official PGA Tour tournament.
“I’m very excited to be back at Riviera,” Woods said in a press release issued by the tournament. “I haven’t played at Riviera in a tournament in a very long time. To be able to play in an event that I used to come to as an amateur, as a junior and now as the tournament host, that is on one of the most historic sites in all of golf, it’s a dream come true.”
“It’s awesome,” Farmers Insurance Open tournament director Peter Ripa told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “There’s a feeling that this comeback is different, with the eye test we got at the Hero World Challenge. He hit shots, he looked strong. There’s a national anticipation for this.”
Woods has experienced great success at Torrey Pines with nine victories, including seven at this tournament (he won four straight from 2005 through ’08); and the memorable the 2008 U.S. Open in an exciting playoff with Rocco Mediate. He also won the Junior World here as a 15-year-old amateur.
In L.A., this will be Woods’ first appearance at Riviera since 2006. It was here that he made his PGA Tour debut as a 16-year-old amateur, competing on a sponsor’s exemption. At the time, he lived about an hour from Riviera in Cypress, CA.
Woods, who has been battling injuries (and other issues) the past few years, has 79 PGA Tour victories.
