Ole Miss Coach Resigns After Escort Service Calls – On The University’s Phone

Someone has done it again.
This time it was not even an athlete, but a coach. A sports figure has done something so stupid – so incredibly foolish – even veteran reporters such as myself find ourselves stunned.
Huge Freeze resigned as head football coach at the University of Mississippi. That may not seem such a surprise since the NCAA is investigating sanctions against the school under Freeze’s watch but the NCAA had nothing to do with Freeze being out at Old Miss.
He resigned for making phone calls to an escort service.
On the university’s phone!
This is akin to Tiger Woods calling/texting girls on his personal phone when he was married. On a stupidity level it is on par with O.J. Simpson telling people in a hotel room after someone else pulled out a gun that “nobody leaves this room.” (The Freeze resignation, by irony or just comedic timing, happened the same day Simpson received parol.)
So now there’s a “Freeze out” at Ole Miss. He loses more than $12 million in salary – this must be a heck of a service! – and goes down as one of the biggest fools in sports, certainly of all time in SEC football. His action knocks Mike Price off that apparently coveted top spot and outpaces even the shameful shenanigans of Bobby Petrino.
So the school known for its “Hottie Toddy” chant and outstanding tailgate party at The Grove is now doomed to spiral back down to its traditional spot near the bottom of the SEC West. Those two wins over Alabama and brief No. 1 ranking are things fans will be reminiscing about over drinks at The Grove for the next 10 years.
Freeze may never coach again, certainly at nothing approaching an elite level. There’s no way – no way – he can go into a recruit’s living room and truthfully tell a player’s mother that he will take care of her son.
At one point, Freeze had it all. He went from Arkansas State to an SEC school where he had his team – albeit briefly – sitting at No. 1 in the nation.
But he blew it with recruiting issues, a lack of control over the program and now this foolish behavior.
It’s enough to make even us sports veterans shake our heads but somehow, we’re not really surprised, either.
