Figure Skating, Luge, Bobsledding & Curling? Well Yes And No

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are underway and we’re being exposed to sports we see only every four years. Which is one of the intriguing things about watching the Olympics.

There are, of course, some that are more interesting and captivating than others. Here’s my favorites and least favorites. How about you?

My Favorite Sports To Watch At The Olympics

1.) Downhill Skiing

I’m a skier and to see those athletes blasting down the mountain at ridiculous speeds, sometimes on one ski trying to maintain control and balance is thrilling for me. I was on the course during the Vancouver Olympics – saw Lindsey Vonn win Gold – and it was an exhilarating Bucket List experience.

2.) Luge

To see people lay down on a sled that looks more flimsy than the one I had as a kid and barrel down a tube of ice at blurring speeds, well, that takes balls. Even for the girls.

3.) Bobsledding

Car racing on ice; what’s a guy NOT to like about this sport!?

4.) Figure Skating

This is the most artistic of the sports at the Games and Americans have a long history of winning Gold, so us in the USA kind of grow up rooting for our skaters. My interest is in the ladies and the couples – NOT the guys.

5.) Ski Cross

Side-by-side racing down a ski slope. That’s something I’ve tried a few times with friends but other skiers and snowboarders kept getting in our way! This is like car racing on the snow – my kind of entertainment.

5.) Ski Jumping

Same daredevil style as the luge. Come on, be honest, how many of you are watching to see a face plant? Me too, because I keep expecting it to happen. By the way, how the heck does someone start in this sport – how do you practice it!?

6.) Cross-Country Skiing

I know from traversing across ski runs how physically hard this is so I’m amazed at the shape the men and women are in this sport. Just look at the finish; it’s the only sport in the Olympics where the competitors collapse at the finish line.

7.) Biathlon

This creative sport combines cross-country skiing with shooting a rifle at a target. Heck yeah!

8.) Short Track Speed Skating

This sport has quick, fast action and the changing of the outside and inside lanes adds last-moment excitement.

8.) Curling

This only qualifies when there are good-looking women competing, such as Team Canada. Hey, one year the girls were so gorgeous they made a calendar!

My Least Favorite Sports To Watch At The Olympics

1.) Snowboarding

Sorry, but as I mentioned previously I’m a skier and I’ve had too many out-of-control snowboarders wipe out right in front of me and cause me to either stretch my knees to the limit to make a split-second turn or cause me to have a yard sale. For this reason I don’t like snowboarders or snowboarding. Watching them go from side to side on a ramp and grabbing a board makes me bored.

2.) Women’s Hockey

I’m sorry and toss me all kinds of negative feedback for being a male chauvinist – I’m not – but I just have no interest in watching women play hockey.

3.) Freestyle Skiing

I HATE moguls when I’m skiing and thus, don’t like watching people go down them, either.

4.) Long Distance Speed Skating

This is like an NBA game; only watch the last two minutes.

5.) Curling

When there are no good-looking women competing, this sport is not just boring, it’s dumb.
