Surf’s up dude.

And not in Australia California, Hawaii, Fiji or Portugal.

Instead, it’s in France.

This due to the fact that surfing has become and official Olympic sport and will debut at the 2024 Paris Games.

Also added to the Olympics as official sports are sport climbing and skateboarding and breakdancing. Yes, breakdancing. Which will be broken down and simply called Breaking.

Below is a breakdown of each sport.

Olympic Sport: Surfing

This is the second popular California sport to make it to the Olympics, the other being beach volleyball.

It was scheduled to be one of the sports of the Tokyo 2020 Games at Tsurigasaki Beach on the Chiba Peninsula. The competition is on shortboards with 40 athletes comprising of 20 men and 20 women.

Surfers perform maneuvers on a given wave, the totality of which is scored by a panel of five judges based on the difficulty, variety and type of maneuvers. They are also judged on their power, speed and flow during and between the maneuvers.

Olympic Sport: Sport Climbing

Originally set to debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games, it involves 40 athletes evenly split into two groups of 20, competing in three disciplines: bouldering, lead climbing and speed.

Each round will start with the presentation of the athletes, followed by an observation of the routes.

In lead, athletes attempt to climb as high as possible on a wall measuring more than 15m in height and 6m overhanging within a fixed time.

In bouldering, the objective is to overcome the most problems on a climbing route in the least number of attempts on 4.5m-high structures over a set period of time. The ranking is decided by the number of problems overcome.

Olympic Sport: Skateboarding

There are two categories, Park and Street for both women and men.

The park competition comprises two rounds: prelims and finals.
In the prelims, 20 skaters will first compete in four heats of five skaters. The first eight skaters from the combined ranking of the heats will progress to the finals.

In each round, the skater’s best of three 45-second runs count as their final round score. Five judges use a 0-100.00 point scale. The highest and lowest scores for each run are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to two decimal places resulting in the final run score.

The street competition is made up of two rounds: prelims and finals.

In the prelims, 20 skaters will first compete in four heats of five skaters. The first eight skaters from the combined ranking of the heats will progress to the finals.

In each round, the skaters will perform two 45-second runs and five tricks. Five judges use a 0-10.0 point scale. The highest and lowest scores for each run or trick are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to one decimal place resulting in the final score.

In each round, the skater’s four highest run or trick scores are added to create their final round score.

Olympic Sport: Breaking

This activity made its Olympic debut at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Thirty-two b-boys and b-girls will do battle in separate competitions, with the numbers evenly split into 16 men and 16 women.

Two breakers go head to head where one will perform first and then their opponent will respond. The battles are scored by judges on creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity and musicality.

The event takes place over two days, with the round-robin competition on the first day followed by the knock-out on day two.
