If you had runner-up Mandaloun to win the Kentucky Derby and are suddenly thinking you’re going to win money if Medina Spirit is stripped of the victory, then you’re out of luck.

Even if Churchill Downs takes away Medina Spirit’s win due to illegal drug use, the winnings stand and will not change.

“All bets will stand as settled,” said John Ewing, data analyst for BetMGM told Yahoo Sports. “The race result has already been determined official and paid. Disqualifications from positive drug tests will not change the results.”

The logistics alone make it impossible pay off new winners. How would they get the money and imagine how difficult – impossible, really – it would be to take money from those who wagered on Medina Spirit.

As also reported by Yahoo Sports, Bob Heleringer, author of “Equine Regulatory Law,” told the Louisville Courier-Journal in 2019 that once a race is official, no later change by regulatory authorities has any effect on payouts. He called this “one of the most irrevocable standards in racing.”

Medina Spirit tested positive after the Derby for an excessive amount of the steroid betamethasone, which is sometimes used to treat pain and inflammation in horses. Churchill Downs immediately suspended trainer Bob Baffert and, as of this writing, the investigation is underway to determine whether or not win stands or  not.

So you are expecting a big payout if Mandaloun is declared the winner, well, don’t spend that money yet. Or at all.
