These Other Ones Do Not Rate High On The Fans’ Intelligence Level
Bragging rights in sports generally involved teams, usually among rival fans pitted against one another in a mostly-friendly grudge match.
Fans love to beat the team they hate the most and one of the reasons for that is the opportunity to “rub it in the face” of fans of the other team. Many of whom are relatives or close friends.
But now leagues and can have bragging rights, too. Certainly after this survey that listed the most intelligent sports fans broken down primarily by leagues. The results may surprise you in some areas but probably not in others.
Working with professional psychologists, Howtobet.com administered a remote IQ test to 1,006 U.S. sports fans to determine the most and least intelligent sports fans in the nation. The survey measured Verbal Intelligence, Mathematical Ability, Logical Reasoning and Visual Reasoning
And guess which sport cam out on top?
Wrestling. Yes, wrestling. The big, brawny activity that is at least as much entertainment as it is raw sport rolled in at an average IQ score of 112.60. Perhaps the pollsters came to the conclusion that wrestling fans really do know that know what they are watching is entertainment more so than a pure competitive sport.
NHL. This result is for another sport famous for its fighting: hockey. NHL fans came in with a number of 112.30. Apparently those frequent scuffles are being watched by intelligent eyes.
NBA. The NBA came up about a three-pointer shy of having the most intelligent fans with a score of 111.70. But those sports fans did not throw up an airball like some of the other sports league fans.
NFL. Fans of the NFL fumbled, bumbled and stumbled to a score of 105.90, good only for fourth place in the survey. If it only included fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars who believe their team is going to be Super Bowl contender this year, then it makes total sense why this sport did not rank higher in the survey.
MLB. This might be the most surprising result of the survey to some people. MLB fans scored at just 101.30. Certainly, San Francisco Giants fans in the sophisticated Bay Area would argue they are the most intelligent fans in sports. Even if they are right, this might have been balanced out by fans of the Miami Marlines, whose team plays in a funky stadium and year in and year out have one of the worst teams in the league. Or fans of the Washington Nationals, who are largely ignored in a place where the NFL’s team takes top billing.
NASCAR? These motorsports fans ranked as the least intelligent with a score of 95.20, the only sport below 100. After all, NASCAR not only has fans named Bubba but a driver, too. NASCAR does, however, have several smart corporate executives who pour their company’s funds into supporting the series. But they don’t spend any time in the infield drinking beer all weekend from atop a motorhome with big flags of their favorite driver blowing in the breeze.
Here is the breakdown:
• Wrestling: 112.60
• NHL: 112.30
• NBA: 110.70
• NFL: 105.90
• MLB: 101.30
• NASCAR: 95.20
